Claremont Symphony Concert for Young People on January 25

Features Copland's "A Lincoln Portrait" and Local Concerto Winner

Claremont, CA, January 18, 2020 . . . The Claremont Symphony Orchestra will present the stately composition "A Lincoln Portrait" at its annual Concert for Young People. Also featured is the winner of the 2019 Claremont Youth Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition: pianist Michael Chu. The admission-free concert, directed by CSO Music Director Robert Sage, will be presented on Saturday, January 25, at 3:30 p.m.

Aaron Copland composed "Lincoln Portrait" shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1942, with the intent of boosting the spirits of the American people during that difficult time. The narration matches Abraham Lincoln's words with moving symphonic music. Noted broadcaster Philip Nash will narrate this work; he has performed as a soloist in the Claremont Symphony's "Messiah" programs and as narrator for CSO's performances of "Peter and the Wolf" and "Tubby the Tuba."

Pianist Michael Chu will perform the first movement of Dmitri Kabelevsky's Piano Concerto No. 3, Allegro molto. Although this work is subtitled "Youth," it is by no means childish or easy to play. The first movement has been called "boisterous and playful." Michael has played piano since he was six years old and is currently a violinist in the Claremont Youth Symphony Orchestra. He is a sophomore at Ruben Ayala High School in Chino Hills.

The concert will also feature favorite and familiar portions of Edward Grieg's "Peer Gynt" Suite such as "In the Hall of the Mountain King," and selections from the "Children's Games" Suite by Georges Bizet.

The free concert will be held at Bridges Hall of Music on the Pomona College campus in Claremont. Handicapped parking is available in front of the hall, with a ramp for the handicapped on the west side of the hall. More information is available at, or call 909-596-5979.
