Carbon, The Life Cycle: Saving our Environment

The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware and Mac Goekler will conduct a two-session course called “ to be held from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Mondays, October 21 and 28 at 30486 Lewes Georgetown Highway, Lewes.
The 2 session course will address how to bring out-of-control global warming back to a stable course. It will explore how the earth’s climate has changed over time; how climate scientists believe the current mass extinction was created; and what must be done to bring natural forces back into harmony. Complicated equations and jargon will not be used, and a science background is not required.
      The course schedule will include:
Session 1: Nature’s Way from 4 Billion BCE to 8000 BCE: A walk through time and how the carbon cycle has changed as life has changed. This will include a close look at how nature has or has not adjusted (especially mass extinctions) to environmental changes. The carbon cycle is used as a descriptor as life on earth is carbon-based. This cycle illustrates how nature has evolved and adjusted to climatic changes and provides indicators as to what is needed now.
Session 2: Human Intervention, 8000 BCE to the Present: A discussion about what actions must occur to curtail the current climate change. This will include a close look at technology that can bring back a stable path of a peaceful co-existence with nature. The course will address what individuals, churches, small and large government entities, etc. can and must do.
Mac Goekler, the course presenter, says, “We can bring nature and the climate back to stasis, but it will require efforts on all fronts. The technical solutions exist—our political leaders are the hurdle. We must find a way to stop this madness.”
Mac Goekler holds a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Arizona in Tucson. He is a retired manufacturing executive and holds five U.S. patents. Goekler is Co-chair of UUSD’s Social and Environmental Justice Committee and holds other leadership positions within the congregation. He is also active in non-profit organizations including Unitarian Universalists (UUs) for Alternatives to the Death Penalty and the UU Peace Ministry Network.

Cost: Payment required - A onetime $10 donation is requested at the first session. Preregistration is required for this course by emailing AdultEdCarbon@uussd.org. For directions and information about UUSD, go to www.uussd.org.
