2020 Adult Confirmation- St. James, Port Arthur

Welcome Adult Confirmation Candidate! We are very happy about your interest in completing your initiation into the Catholic Community through the sacrament of Confirmation. The weeks of instruction ahead are a journey of conversion and transformation. As you embark on this journey, it is important to have someone (your sponsor) accompany you throughout the process. We ask that you read carefully the information provided below on choosing a sponsor. This person is welcome to attend the formation sessions with you. If they are unable, then we encourage you both to meet regularly to share the journey of faith and experiences of God in your life. Before you begin your classes, we are required to submit, as a permanent record in the Catholic Church, information regarding your status as a baptized Catholic. The information we need from you is the one-page Form for Confirmation plus a copy of your baptismal certificate issued within the last 6 months. We must have this filled out and sent to our office at least one week prior to the first class meeting. We appreciate your cooperation so that when we meet together our focus will completely be on our journey of faith. The only thing we need you bring to the first session is an open heart to our spiritual journey together. Thank you, and again…welcome! To emphasize the unity of the two sacraments, it is appropriate that this be one of the baptismal godparents." "The sponsor's function is to take care that the person confirmed behaves as a true witness of Christ and faithfully fulfils the duties inherent in this sacrament." In view of understanding that Confirmation is a sacrament of initiation, it is desirable that the godparent at Baptism, if available, also be the sponsor at Confirmation. This change expresses more clearly the link between Baptism and Confirmation and makes the function and responsibility of the sponsor more effective.  This does not mean that the option of choosing a special sponsor for Confirmation is excluded.  Choosing a sponser for Confirmation is a very important decision, which requires the candidate to ask and answer certain questions. They are: Does the person participate fully in the life of the Church sacramentally by attending Eucharist weekly and receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation frequently? Does the person live a life of service by using his or her gifts and talents to serve the neeeds of others in the parish and wider community? Is he or she a person of prayer? Pastors will see that the sponsors chosen by the candidates are spiritually fit to take on this responsibility and have these qualities: sufficient maturity to fulfill their function; membership in the Catholic Church and their own reception of Christian initiation through Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. freedom from any impediment of law to their fulfilling the office of sponsor.  Canon 874, paragraph 1 (Who can be a sponsor) To be admitted to undertake the office of sponsor, a person must:  be appointed by the candidate for Baptism, or by the parents of whoever stands in their place, of failing these, by the parish priest or the minister; to be appointed the person must be suitable for this role and have the intention of fulfilling it. be not less the sixteen years of age, unless a different age has been stipulated by the dicesan Bishop, or unless the parish priest of the minister considers that there is a just reason for an exception to be made; be a Catholic who has been Confirmed and has received the blessed Eucharist, and who lives a life of faith which befits the role to be undertaken; not labour under a canonical penalty, whether imposed or declared.
