      EVENT DETAILS
      Southwest Virginia Climate Strike

In the US, youth and adults, institutional and grassroots organizations, climate-focused and social justice groups, are coming together as a unified front to demand the change we need to save our future. The youth have been leading the way and demanding bolder action, and now it’s time for everyone else to back them up. The climate crisis is the largest threat of our time, and we’re counting on our collective power to demand immediate and decisive action. This is our opportunity to move beyond the traditional climate bubble and expand the table of who is involved in this movement. It is time to lift up the voices and stories of young people on the frontlines of this crisis and ensure we are creating an intergenerational and intersectional climate justice movement. On September 20, three days before the UN Climate Summit in NYC, young people and adults will strike all across the US and world to demand transformative action be taken to address the climate crisis. September 20 will be one of the largest climate mobilizations in US history. We, as a global society, are at a crossroads. We have a decision to make. Are we going to choose money or power or we going to choose the future? This strike is an invitation to choose. Choose the kids, choose humanity, choose the future.THE RISK IS LOCALWe are in a climate emergency. Here in Southwest Virginia, we are directly at risk from extreme local weather events and indirectly from weather disasters elsewhere. But, we are not helpless. There are actions we can take to do our part to reduce climate damage and to protect ourselves, our neighbors, and our community. This is an emergency. Please come out on September 20th to The Universalist Unitarian Church of Roanoke to hear several of our local officials speak and to find out what you can do to make a difference.Confirmed local officials & other speakers include: Virginia House Delegate Sam Rasoul Vice Mayor Joe Cobb City Council Member Djuna Osbourne UUCR Reverend Alex Richardson Roanoke City Sustainability Outreach Coordinator Nell Boyle We encourage everyone to bring a sign that expresses your thoughts and feelings about the climate crisis (BE CREATIVE!). There will be an area to make your own sign at the event if you are short on supplies or ideas as well.  We also encourage everyone to wear black or red. It's time for BOLD action - we may as well look the part! The exact location of the rally will be in the Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke's parking lot. If it is raining we will move things inside the church. Parking will be available at the Christ Lutheran Church across the street - 2011 Brandon Ave SW, Roanoke, VA 24015. If you'd like to help us cover the costs of holding this event, you can make a donation on our GoFundMe page.
